IN RECENT YEARS THE NUMBER OF THE RESTAURANTS CALLED OPEN-CAFE HAS BEEN INCREASING IN TOKYO. THERE WE CAN ENJOY EATING WHILE LOOKING AT THE TOWN AND BEING LOOKED AT. THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN " LOOKING AT AND BEING LOOKED AT " HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED, WHICH CONSTITUTE AN ATTRACTIVE FEATURE OF A NEW CITY. THE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO INVESTIGATE THE SITING CONDITIONS OF THE OPEN-CAFES, THEIR DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS AND THE CORRELATIONS BETWEEN THE ABOVE ATTIRUBUTES. THE CONCLUSIONS OBTAINED ARE ; (1) ALL THE 104 OPEN-CAFES SURVEYED IN TOKYO ARE LOCATED ALONG MAIN STREETS OR AVENUES. (2) THE CAFES ARE CLASSIFIED INTO 6 TYPES IN TERMS OF DESIGN FEATURES IN RELATION TO URBAN ENVIRONMENT. (3) AN IMPORTANT CORRELATION WAS FOUND BETWEEN SITING AND DESIGN OF THE CAFES.
