STATES AND MPOS IN THE U.S. ARE FACING THE REQUIREMENT TO INSTALL EFFECTIVE AND PROACTIVE PUBLIC INVOLVE-MENT PROCESSES IN THEIR TRANSPORTATION PLANNING STAGE AFTER THE ISTEA OF 1991. WE SUMMARIZED AND DISCUSSED ON THE BRIEF HISTORY AND CURRENT EXAMPLES OF PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT IN PLANNING AND PROJECT DEVELOP-MENT IN THE U.S. AS REGIONAL DIFFERENCES IN THE PROCESS MAY NOT BE NEGLIGIBLE EVEN WITHIN JAPAN, THE VARIETY OF THE PROCESSES AMONG REGIONS IN THE U.S. WILL PROVIDE US VALUABLE INSIGHT TO FIND OUT APPROPRIATE PROCEDURES IN JAPAN.
