This paper aims to clarify spatial characteristics of nationwide distribution and citywide location of 'Yuri' (gay quarters) in Yedo era. Based on historical documents and maps of towns, the analysis was conducted. Findings are as follows, 1. The number of 'Yuri' increased in 4times during Yedo era. 2. The citywide location and the spatial characteristics of 'Yuri' in castle towns can be classified in 7 patterns, and each type of 'Yuri' depended on relations between the Tokugawa shogunate and the lord of the castle. 3. All the allocation of 'Yuri' fulfilled the function of psychological gates.
