Abstract
This study aims to describe the community outreach activities by department of architecture and planning, addition to university-based community design centers in the United States. HUD started COPC program in 1994,which aims to encourage institutions of higher education to join in partnerships with their communities to work on community revitalization. Through the community outreach activities, students work as facilitator or coordinator to respond and meet communities' needs in order to promote community development. COPC program enlarged opportunities for universities' community outreach activities, and also for educational program. These U. S experiences give us good suggestions to promote education for young architects and planners who can coordinate community-based planning, which is growing particularly since 1990s in Japan.
