A Study on the Present Condition and the Problems for Townscape Conservation and Reconstruction,in Historic Areas in Beijing Old City,China

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the present conditions of the historic areas in Beijing Old City in order to clarify the problems for the current solutions of townscape conservation and reconstruction. A planning for the conservation of the historical area was considered and set in 2001. They decided to proceed a step-by-step small-scaled redevelopment to maintain the historical areas. However, a reconstruction of the whole courtyard house is carried out instead of the partial reconstruction for most of the cases. Therefore there are some concerns arising such as an uniformity of the design and the materials used for the reconstructions and courtyard houses are losing their valued characteristics.
