Abstract
Population density is one of the key factors that affect car ownership and usage. However, its magnitude is unclear because of definition of population density, omitted variable bias and selectivity bias. In this study, making use of disaggregated data in Switzerland, we estimate the relationship between population density of commune level and household's car ownership, type choice and usage controlling demographic and zonal variables. Car ownership and usage decrease with population density, but car type choice is not influenced. The elasticities are around -0.28 and -1.28respectively. In addition, commune voting rate of green party also affects car ownership, type choice and usage.
