Abstract
This study aims to obtain the knowledge for the realization of compact city by clarifying the transition of population density structure from 1970 to 2015 and the relationship between the population density structure and the household characteristic. We analyze Matsumoto city as case study. We propose DA, the method of visualization of population density structure by using 100m meshes as units, and apply DA to the time of three, 1970, 1990, and 2015. As a result, we clarify the following. (1) Current population density structure consists mostly of the low or medium density areas between about 40-60 inhabitants per hectare. (2) The household and housing characteristics affect difference of the population density. (3) The accessibility by public transportation varies by the urbanization period even in same population density areas.
