Abstract
Municipalities' active participation in public transportation policy becomes increasingly important because it becomes difficult to maintain regional public transportation systems in a super aging society with population decline. The number of municipalities that formulate a regional public transportation network formation plan is increasing, but the successful example is limited in small number. This study focuses on the government expenditure for public transportation policy by municipalities. To clarify the status of the government expenditure for public transportation policy, we carry out the questionnaire survey targeting all cities in Japan. For precise analysis, we identify the category of the expenditure in this survey. By examining the relationship between the characteristics of municipalities and the expenditure, following two points are clarified. 1) The ratio of the aid for running costs has weak correlation with the ratio of personal car use. 2) Municipalities that formulate a regional public transportation network formation plan have relatively higher ratio of the government expenditure for public transportation policy.
