Abstract
More and more attention has been paid to safety regarding rail crossings. It is necessary to combat not only accidents on rail crossings, but also hindrances, which mean cases where trains suddenly have nothing but to stop being confronted with dangerous circumstances vehicles or pedestrians have made, in order to secure safety. The number of hindrances is on the increase, and reducing the number is expected to be effective in preventing accidents. This study aims to clarify the impacts and effective methodology of countermeasures introduced by a railway company with the purpose of reducing hindrances. It mentions that hindrances can be attributed mainly to "the mixture of vehicles and pedestrians" considering the numbers of hindrances and traffic circumstances of each railway crossing, and discusses the effectiveness of color pavements and widening of rail crossings from the viewpoint of "the division of vehicles and pedestrians"
