Abstract
This research clarified the relationship between urban formation in Edo-Tokyo and the process from construction of Mitsuke to demolition. Mitsuke is a gate to enter the Edo castle and the castle town, and it was built at the nodes of the road and the moat for the defense of the castle. Mitsuke is composed of quadrangular stone wall and two gates. It is thought that Mitsuke was homogeneously arranged, but it was found that it was built with scale and form suitable for the place. Quadrangular stone wall has been scaled according to the importance of the defense of the place and Watariyagura, which is a building on the gate, has been scaled so as to show the dignity of the shogun ate to the outside. However, in the demolition of Mitsuke after the Meiji period, everything was handled homogeneously as an obstacle on the road.
