Abstract
Almost all cities in Japan adopted linear commercial district before the Second World War. This study aims to clarify the planning thought of linear commercial district, focusing on the time of introduction of zoning system in Japan. By analyzing Yoshikazu Uchida and Toshiro Kasahara's writings, foreign zoning systems of the day and the process of making the city planning in Tokyo, the followings are found out. 1) According to Uchida and Kasahara's thought, linear commercial district focused primarily on the convenience in residential district. 2) Some streets in Tokyo may be designed as commercial district in order to achieve an ideal of street. 3) Linear commercial district was no longer a planned method to realize an ideal representation of a city.
