Abstract
In recent times, cities are facing various problems due to declining populations, aging societies, and rapid motorization. Compact city design is being promoted as one of the methods to solve those problems, and some cities are creating pedestrian zones to create attractive place and vitalize city center. In this study, we quantified city vitalization based on field surveys and measured the population of reachable areas by mode using GIS, in order to clearly understand its influence on city vitalization. The results of this analysis clearly show the strong influence on areas that can be reached by public transport, in contrast to the weak influence of areas that can be reached by vehicle on vibrant pedestrian zones.
