Abstract
This study aims to suggest an idea to enhance development and planning of pedestrian network around urban railway stations in suburban Bangkok, which are often separated from existing car-oriented urban fabric. It is revealed that current policies on urban planning cannot promote area development as a whole sufficiently. However, the status quo shows that not only public entities or developers but also local communities and residents have contributed to the improvement of pedestrian network. Also, it is found that local communities and developers adapted to new infrastructure,by making the best use of the contemporary built environment. All of these facts suggest that one possible alternative method for enhancing pedestrian network around similar stations could be realized by putting emphasis on path-dependency, that is, by recognizing the existing situation in detail and trying to utilize it.
