A residual tilt was observed at Aso, central Kyushu, Japan, from the Yunnan earthquake of May 29, 1976, which was characterized by a definite tilt movement starting at the first arrival of the earthquake motion and lasting about 20 minutes or more. Moreover, the long period (1, 000-2, 000 sec) mantle Love waves (G5 and G6) from the earthquake were well traced, though the earthquake magnitude was assigned to be about 7.
These phenomena suggest that a fairly large crustal deformation having a long time constant such as 20min or more might have accompanied the earthquake.
