The objective of this study was to examine the usefulness of schematic charts used to describe home economics as a field of study in orientation classes for home economics subjects at universities.
The schematic charts were used as educational materials for 305 university students in classes in October 2019. Self-administered questionnaire surveys were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the materials. The results showed the charts to be generally viewed positively, with more than 90% of the students stating home economics to be an important field of study. However, the percentage of students who were motivated to study home economics after taking the class reached only 70%.More male students gave negative responses than female students. The impression of home economics held by students changed in about 30% of the students after they had examined the materials. In the free description sections of the surveys, respondents wrote that they had understood the significance of home economics, acquired knowledge, and had gained a broader perspective on this field of study in time and space. They now valued home economics more and were more aware of the positive connections between the study of home economics and themselves and others.
