Layered vanadyl alkylphosphates, where the alkyl groups are not only straight-chain but also branched and cyclic ones, were prepared by reaction of a mixture of V2O5 and V4O9 with P2O5 in alcohol. The distances between layers of the vanadyl alkylphosphates increased linearly as the length of the alcohol increased. The (VO)2P2O7 catalyst obtained by calcination of vanadyl methylphosphate exhibited a high performance in the oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride.
