Synthesis of Novel Layered Vanadyl Alkylphosphates as Catalyst Precursors for Selective Oxidation of n-Butane

Layered vanadyl alkylphosphates, where the alkyl groups are not only straight-chain but also branched and cyclic ones, were prepared by reaction of a mixture of V₂O₅ and V₄O₉ with P₂O₅ in alcohol. The distances between layers of the vanadyl alkylphosphates increased linearly as the length of the alcohol increased. The (VO)₂P₂O₇ catalyst obtained by calcination of vanadyl methylphosphate exhibited a high performance in the oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride.
