With the rapid growth of the Internet, a number of information services are now evolving. For the construction of information services, several technologies like WAIS, Gopher and WWW are used as their fundamental mechanism. Especially, since WWW has become the most popular system on the Internet in these days, several keen technologies for both multimedia information handling and several security functions to enable the “Electronic Commerce” type of services are integrated into the WWW system. This article looks how these popular systems for information services on the Internet are working, and discusses their implications for the digital library challenges.
