After reviewing the technical components of electronic libraries, several projects carried out in Japan and USA are examined mainly in terms of the differences in their approaches, emphases of functions, contents and users. Then, technical limitations of the present systems are pointed out, and current research efforts to overcome those limitations to have more user-friendly systems are reviewed with an indication of future directions of research.
