In this paper we introduce an outline of the Electronic Reference Library (ERL) Internet Service developed by SilverPlatter. We also describe briefly the ERL server system itself. ERL Internet Service is a database retrieval service that enables end users to utilize the database server via the Internet. This service reduces the administrative work and hardware cost at a user's site. However, because of the recent increasing population on the Internet, the extensive traffic sometimes causes unsatisfactory response time. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the optimal conditions for the ERL Internet Service. We study the relationship between line bandwidth and response time using both Web browser and WinSPIRS client software.
