In Japan, current pharmacy education is insufficient for the student to become a pharmacist who can manage pharmaceutical care. In discussing what is necessary to improve the situation, differences in the pharmacy education systems of Japan and the USA are compared. In contrast to the USA, the education period in Japanese pharmacy schools is too short (only 4 years including general education) while the education purpose is multi-oriented, not only for pharmacists but for researchers and others as well. At present, introducing long-term pharmacy internships in hospital and/or community pharmacies as a part of the curriculum is essential to develop a student's ability to solve problems in a clinical setting.
