The author has found the purple sulphur bacteria and the purple athiobacteria in the water of the lower layer six meters below the surface of the Lake Hamana, the Lake Suigetsu and the Lake Harutori, among other brackish water lakes in Japan producing hydrogen sulphide in their bottoms.
The species belonging to theChromatium found in these lakes are Chromatium globosum TOKUDA, sp. nov., Chromatium spadix TOKUDA, sp., nov. and Chromatium minus WINOGRADSKY, and the species belonging to the purple athiobacteria is Rhodospirillum brevis TOKUDA, sp. nov.
