A questionnaire survey was conducted among 352 first-year high school students in order to investigate the relationships among their relative weight, tendency toward depression (DSRS-C scale) and physical fitness.

According to BMI (Body Mass Index), students weredivided into three categories: lanky trend, standard and obese trend. The ratios of the male students of these three groups were 13.2% (lanky trend), 74.7% (standard) and 12.1% (obese trend). Those of the female students were 16.9%, 73.6% and 9.6%, respectively. The ratio of students with tendency toward depression among female students was higher than that among male students. The tendency was the highest among obese trend group, the second highest among lanky trend group, and the lowest among standard group. In terms of the “New Physical Fitness Test”, in the standard group, both male and female, the number of items showing higher points was larger than two other groups. A correlation was recognized between the points of the items of “New Physical Fitness Test” and the points of depression.

In order to maintain a good condition of the physical and mental conditon of high school students, it would be effective to give them concrete advice on how to maintain standard body weight.
