Abstract

Purpose: To quantitatively compare the visual field (VF) results measured by orthoptists and students on simulated patients using a training system for the Goldmann perimeter, and to clarify the differences between them.

Methods: Eight orthoptic students and five orthoptists with >5 years of clinical experience in ophthalmology participated in this study. The participants performed VF tests on a simulated patient with glaucomatous changes using the system. The isopter of V/4e, I/4e, I/3e, I/2e and I/1e was calculated using plot points recorded by the participant. The union area (UA), intersection area (IA), symmetric difference area (SDA) and intersection percentage were analyzed by superimposing the VF data detected by the study participants and the simulated patient’s data.

Results: IA was significantly narrower, and SDA was significantly wider in orthoptic students than in orthoptists.

Conclusions: Orthoptists more accurately measured the VF than orthoptic students.
