The search of magnetic thin films with perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) for magnetic tunnel junctions has raised interest in transition-metal systems where the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) could play a key role. In our research, the microscopic mechanisms of MCA in Co-based transitions-metal thin films are systematically investigated by using full-potential linearized augmented plane wave calculations. The results predict that large perpendicular MCA can be achieved by tuning the atomic-layer alignments in Co-Ni films.
