The availability of semiconductor laser diodes in the violet and blue region has opened the door for compact laser sources. We have constructed an external cavity diode laser using a commercial 423 nm laser diode. The laser system is used for Doppler-free saturated absorption spectroscopy of the 4s^2 ^1S_0- 4s4p ^1P_1 transition in atomic calcium and of molecular tellurium line number #1508 in Te_2 atlas.
