The submicroscopic structure of electrolytically polished and etched surfaces of copper single crystals was studied by means of electron diffraction and electron microscope, supplemented by the method of light figures. Our results indicate that the etched surfaces are composed of submicroscopic facets which belong to [100] zone and the electropolished surfaces are smooth and undulating. Assuming a simple model for the undulation, the mean inner potential of copper crystal was determined. The mean value of the mean inner potential turned out to be 11 volts.
