The observed decay of a fluorescence intensity following a pulsed laser excitation is, in general, different from the decay of the upper-level population. By using the magic-angle excitation and a magnetic field this difficulty has been resolved. The pressure dependence of the decay rate has been measured for neon 2p53p levels, and the collisional depopulation rate coefficient has been derived. The conjecture by Chang and Setser (J. Chem. Phys. 72 (1980) 4099) that the dominant depopulation from some of the levels is attributed to deexcitation 2p53p→2p53s has been shown incorrect.
