Using the stress tensor expression for liquid crystals (nematics) and with two approximations, we obtain the same stress tensor as that for magnetic fluids with an intrinsic angular momentum obtained by Shliomis and independently by Tanahashi et al. The two approximations consist of neglect of the terms higher order than the second in a director n and neglect of the terms which originate from distortion energy. We also make clear through these approximation procedures that Shliomis and Tanahashi et al.’s formula involve the assumptoin of noninteraction between colloidal particles in the magnetic fluids.
