Neutron scattering experiments using single crystals of LaCu6 and CeCu6 revealed the same type of the structural phase transition from orthorhombic to monoclinic structure in both compounds. The softening of [100] transverse acoustic phonons associated with the structural phase transition was observed in the high temperature phase. The temperature dependences of the distortion angle in the monoclinic phase and of the acoustic soft phonon can be unified for both compounds as a function of the reduced temperature T⁄Tm. The major contribution to this phase transition was concluded to be attributed not to 4f electrons of rare earth ions but to 3d electrons of Cu ions.
