Free carrier effects on the absorption and photoluminescence spectra were extensively investigated in n-type modulation-doped GaAs–AlxGa1−xAs multi-quantum wells in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 40 T. The magneto-optical spectra were measured as a function of temperature. Near the absorption edge, we have observed anomalous sharp peaks which have different temperature and magnetic field dependence from the ordinary excitons. The nature of the anomalous peaks is discussed in terms of the Fermi edge singularity. The oscillatory magneto-optical spectra are analysed based on the Landau levels in the n-type quantum well potential.
