This study investigates Pre-Afforestation Land-Use of post-WWII Plantation Forests in Japan using data from the 1960 World Census of Agriculture and Forestry, focusing on the peak period of postwar afforestation. Municipalities were categorized into ten groups based on their land-use history, including plantation clearings, natural forests, and non-forest land. The analysis highlighted regional variations, with specific categories concentrated in areas such as Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Kinki, while others were more widely distributed across the country. The research also identified regions where natural regeneration is challenging due to the limited seed bank of tall tree species, suggesting that reforestation may be more appropriate in these areas. These findings offer valuable insights into the development of existing plantations and provide guidance for future forestry practices, particularly in regions with challenging natural regeneration conditions.
