The number of vehicles sold in Japan that are equipped with continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) has continually increased in recent years. The efficiency of an automotive transmission is an important factor in improving fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions. Therefore, the authors took note of the efficiency of a traction-drive CVT and a belt-drive CVT. Based on efficiency measurements for various driving conditions; we analyzed the different characteristics for the differing structures of both traction-drive and belt-drive CVTs.
