This paper aims to investigate the influence of the first and second preceding vehicles on the third following vehicle. Assuming that longitudinal behavior of three platooned vehicles follow a conventional car-following model, the model parameters were then identified through a field experiment on a test track. The t-values of the parameters obtained by multiple regression analysis were compared to check if which preceding vehicle affects the third vehicle most. Numerical analysis revealed that the influence shows absolutely opposite if it accelerates or decelerates and if leader and follower are heavy vehicle or passenger car.
