Abstract
Models of chronic renal failure were made on dogs by the ligation of the second branch of lt. renal artery combined with rt. nephrectomy, preserving the 1/8 remnant kidney over all, and they were treated with oral adsorbent (AST-120) postoperatively. They showed increase in serum creatinin and BUN levels, but during the administration of the oral adsorbent, an improvement was observed to some extent, regarding crestinine, BUN levels, creati nine clearance and capacity of PSP excretion, and the mortality rate was diminished remarkably. On the other hand, High Performance Liquid Chromatography revealed abnormal peaks such as seen in patients of chronic renal failure, but the appearance of those peaks were inhibited during the administration of the adsorbent and this may indicate adsorption of unknown uremic metabolites including so-called “uremic toxin” by the oral adsorbent play an important role in the improvement of renal function.
