A NEW MODALITY OF HEMOPURIFICATION USING DIRECT HEMOPERFUSION AND HEMODIALYSIS FOR THE TREATMENT OF RENAL FAILURE

Previous study from our laboratory has shown that a new modality of hemopurification using hemodialyser and charcoal hemoperfuser has the higher clearance of BUN, creatinine and uric acid than the conventional modality using hemodialyser alone. Furthermore the new modality seems to have higher ability in removal of middle molecular sbstances. Taking those fundamental data into consideration, we have applied the new modality to the treatment of chronic renal failure (CRF) and acute renal failure (ARF). The new modality was found to be effective to decrease the frequency of hemopurification treatments per week among CRF patients, to shorten the each treatment time of hemopurification for CRF patients, to treat the uremic pericarditis being possibly caused by uremic toxins, to maintain the residual kidney function of CRF patients during the initiation period of the hemopurification. The new modality was also effective in the treatment of ARF. We used the direct hemoperfusion for the treatment of ARE with the expectation that the hemoperfuser would function as the artificial reticuloendothelial system removing the various toxins from blood stream. Thus we concluded that the new modality using hemodialyser and hemoperfuser simaltaneously was very effective for the treatment of CRE and ARF.
