Abstract

Acronym ECLA, Extracorporeal Lung Assist, for both CO2 removal and oxygen supply with a Kolobow artificial membrane lung was successfully accomplished in a goat for 38 days. Blood was withdrawn through the jugular vein of the goat, and returned to the common carotid artery. During the ECLA, the goat was kept awake, and fed ad lib. When oxygen concentration of inflow gas to the artificial lung was intentionally risen from 30% to 100%, the platelet count decreased and general condition of the goat deteriorated. They recovered when oxygen concentration was lowered to 30%. The control of oxygen concentration of inflow gas to artificial lung may be one of the most important safety factors for a successful prolonged ECLA.
