The prosthetic valve function by cardiac pacing method was carried out in 41 patients after aortic (16 patients), mitral (14 patients), aortic combined with OMC (7 patients), and aortic combined with mitral valve replacement (4 patients) at long term stage. The results were as follows. (1) The rate-output curves were observed sloped type in AVR group, peaked type in MVR and AVR combined with MVR groups, and flat type in AVR combined with OMC group. (2) In AVR groups, No. 25-29 valves were better valve function than No. 23 and 21 valves. (3) In MVR groups, the xenograft valves were better than the mechanical valves especially at the view point of the response to tachycardia. And in the xenograft valves, No. 29-33 Ionescu-Shiley valves showed the best prosthetic valve function.

Twenty four mongrel dogs were devided into 4 groups: Group I (N=6) underwent ECC for 2hr by bubble oxygenator (Bu) with roller pump (Ro), Group II (N=4) by Bu with centrifugal pump (Ce), Group III (N=6) by membrane oxygenator (Me) with Ro, and Group IV (N=8) by Me with Ce. These 4 groups were studied in the aspect of cardiovascular effects, platelet function, platelet index and function, whole blood aggregation, and the change of the vasoactive prostanoids. These conclusions were obtained. 1) Significant initial drop of platelet count at the onset of ECC was observed in Group I, II, III, but less in Group IV. 2) Preservation of platelet count in Group IV was better than other 3 groups. 3) Serum free hemoglobin was less in amount in Group IV than Group II and III (not statistically), but less statistically than Group I at the time of ECC 60min and 120min. 4) In the aspect of whole blood aggregation and 6 keto PGF
1α/TXB
2 ratio, easy thrombus formation was inhibited in Group IV to some extent.

Acronym ECLA, Extracorporeal Lung Assist, for both CO
2 removal and oxygen supply with a Kolobow artificial membrane lung was successfully accomplished in a goat for 38 days. Blood was withdrawn through the jugular vein of the goat, and returned to the common carotid artery. During the ECLA, the goat was kept awake, and fed ad lib. When oxygen concentration of inflow gas to the artificial lung was intentionally risen from 30% to 100%, the platelet count decreased and general condition of the goat deteriorated. They recovered when oxygen concentration was lowered to 30%. The control of oxygen concentration of inflow gas to artificial lung may be one of the most important safety factors for a successful prolonged ECLA.
