BiocompatibiIities, especially blood material interaction, should be considered not only from local material-blood level but also from its impact on the entire systemic responses of the recipient.
Implanted surface will be transformed into either benign or malignant surface due to various parameters. Effecting parameters are multiple, including material itself, its dynamic environments, dynamic surface changes due to time factors such as superacute (-2 hr), acute (-2 weeks) or chronic blood exposure, its affinities to various blood constituents, implanted system, and recipient's physiological or pathophysiological condition.
In the past, biocompatibility studies on artificial hearts have been focused around coagulation system and platelet interaction, while artificial kindney researches on complement system. It is extremely important to understand that regardless of the system employed, blood exposure to various materials provokes the similar global systemic responses of coagulation, complement, kinin and fibrinolytic systems, together with cellular reactions in the recipient.
The experimental studies conducted by us with various plasma filters of different materials reconfirmed these aspects, stressing the importance of systemic impacts and time varying dynamic effects of blood exposure of various materials.
