Abstract
We have developed a newly designed Vibrating Electro-Magnetic Pump(VEMP), which is unique in the structure and the fluid mechanism. This pump can generate high frequency pulsatile flow over 10 l/min. We applied the VEMP as the pump for Extracorporeal circulation (ECC) in animal experiments. This paper deals with comparative study of the gas exchange efficiency of membrane oxygenator both VEMP and roller pump (RP). ECC by the use of VEMP indicated more excellent gas exchange efficiency than the ECC by RP, and obtained satisfactory hemodynamics. These results suggest that VEMP is very useful as the pump to minitualize in size for ECC system and for totaly implantable system.
