Abstract
The performance of gas transfer, heat exchange efficiency and pressure drop of new infant membrane oxygenators; SMO/INF 16267 (SMO) and D 705 MIDIFLO (MIDIFLO), were evaluated and were compared with those of CAPIOX II 36. SMO and MIDIFLO contain an extracapillary type membrane oxygenator and a heat exchanger in a compact body. Gas membrane area and static priming volume were 0.7m2, 170ml for SMO and 0.9 m2, 140ml for MIDIFLO, respectively. Both oxygenators had excellent O2 and CO2 transfer performance, good heat exchange efficiency and low pressure drop. The present study indicates that SMO and MIDIFLO are suitable for clinical extracorporeal circulation for infants.
