Abstract
A new type of non-coated activated charcoal (activated controlled pore carbon; ACPC) for direct hemoperfusion was investigated. Activated charcoal has several difficulties when used for direct hemoperfusion, i. e., release of carbon powder, damage to blood cell, platelet adhesion and aggregation.
We developed a new type of bead activated charcoal, which can be used in non-coated state without these difficulties. The capacity to adsorb creatinine, uric acid, inulin, Vitamin B12 and various amino acids is superior to coal activated charcoal. The concentrations of guanidine and methylguanidine were increased during the activated charcoal incubation, suggesting the production of these guanidine delivertives under the presence of creatinine.
