Initial stage of H2 absorption on the surface of LaNi5 is usually controlled by the dissociation of molecular H2. In recent studies we reported the dramatic effect of alkaline surface pretreatment before the H2 reaction, which enhances the hydrogen absorption even after significant surface oxidations. In this study the surface of LaNi5 alloy treated by LiOD solution was analyzed by TOF-SIMS. LiOD was used to distinguish the H from the environment. The reaction mechanism of the accelerated absorption by the alkaline treatment is discussed.
