Abstract

Continuous hemodiafiltration (CHDF), plasma exchange, and direct hemoperfusion are methods of acute blood purification. Perioperative indication of hemodialysis and CHDF in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis are also included in acute blood purification. The safety of acute blood purification has not been established, as deaths have reportedly resulted from human error, although its aim was to improve disease state. Clinical engineers could contribute to medical safety, analysis of accidental cases, application of medical check lists, sharing information with other specialities, supplying accidental information to manufacturers, and cooperating in the development of products. It is important to consider specific measures for preventing accidents by detailed analysis and sharing information using incidental reports.
