Abstract
 It is important not only for safety but also for decreasing track maintenances to suppress large dynamic wheel load. In this paper, effectiveness of the previous countermeasures for large wheel load in Tokaido-Shinkansen is reviewed first, and it is shown that the existing issue is maintenance of shortwave longitu dinal irregularities. Measuring method of asymmetry chord offset which is adopted for the latest inspection car has better accuracy in such wave lengths.
 We explain that wheel load can be estimated from curvature of longitudinal level of track shape by analysis of full-scale experiment. Then, accuracy of the estimation is verified by numerical simulations and actual measurements. From those results, a new track maintenance method of shortwave length to suppress wheel load variation is proposed. Finally, its usefulness is discussed.
