A MODELLING FOR CAR-FOLLOWING BEHAVIOR ILLUSTRATED AS SPIRAL MOVEMENT

Abstract

There are no models that completely trace the car-following behavior on an expressway. The paper tries to model the behavior as an oscillating spring-mass system by external force corresponding to driver's subconsciously keeping gap to his foregoing vehicle. The model illustrates spiral movement on gap vs. relative velocity graph, because actual behavioral data from probe-car is ongoing on the spiral curve. Verification concludes that the model acceptably reproduces actual behavioral data of general public drivers from video image as well as probe-car data.
