Abstract
In this study, ecotoxicity test using bacteria as a test organism was examined and toxicity of pharmaceuticals was evaluated by the test. Incubation of bacteria in the microplate about for eight hours will be a suitable incubation period for bacteria growth needed for ecotoxicity tests. High correlation was observed between absorbance (450 nm) measured by a microplate reader and bacteria cell concentration in the microplate wells, which indicates that bacteria growth in the microplate can be monitored by absorbance measurement of microplate wells. As a result of toxicity evaluation of pharmaceuticals, antibiotics of tetracycline, aminoglycoside and quinolones showed high toxicity by the bacteria growth inhibition test. However, toxicity onto bacteria growth inhibition was not shown for beta-lactam antibiotics. Pharmaceuticals other than antibiotics such as antipyretic analgesics and antiarrhythmic agents indicated little toxicity onto the bacteria growth.
