Abstract
Recently, Work Style Reform is being promoted mainly by the Japanese government. Its promotion and spread of telework, one item of Work Style Reform, may change lifestyle, activity and travel behavior in urban areas. It is important to identify the influence the changes have on transportation demand, and for railway companies to make effective policies to increase the number of passengers and activate the areas along urban railway lines. However, it is difficult to research the behavioral changes which have been rarely observed using existing statistics. In this study, policies, rules, and the current situation on work styles are identified by conducting an original interview survey of companies working on Work Style Reform. In addition, the relationship between company policies and the implementation situation of telework are identified by conducting an original online questionnaire survey of individual employees at the companies. The study concludes that work style change, which makes it possible to choose work location through telework, leads to changes in behavior including leisure time and place, and demand for relocation to suburban areas.
