Abstract

Population decline has become a huge problem in Japan, as the population has been decreasing since 2010. One of the problems caused by population decline is the decrease in the number of passengers getting on and off the railway station. If the number of passengers decreases, it may be difficult for railway companies to maintain their services and the area around each station may decline. In this study, we consider what kind of land use is optimal to prevent the decrease in the number of passengers. As a result, we found that we could halt the decline to some extent by converting vacant land around each station into factories and low-rise housing. However, there are stations where the number of passengers cannot be halted even if all vacant land is converted to factories or low-rise buildings, and it is necessary to consider compact cities or urban shrinkage for these stations.
