This study analyzed the effectiveness and user acceptability of a narrow two-stage crossing facility based on a video observation survey and questionnaire survey at a two-stage crosswalk with a traffic island of 2.0 meter width installed on two-lane, two way road in Meito Ward, Nagoya City. As a result, it was found that the narrow two-stage crossing facility was effective in facilitating and safe crossing, such as increasing the vehicle yield rate and reducing vehicle speed, and that the effect was sufficient in comparison with other locations with similar road structures. In addition, it was found that pedestrians generally accepted the width of the traffic island of approximately 2.0 m, that the presence of the traffic island increased drivers’ attention to pedestrians, and that visibility of the traffic island was one of the factors that strongly influenced users’ decision before and after the installation of the traffic island by statistical test and discriminant analysis.
