Abstract

In Japan, a super-aging society, it is important to improve walking spaces that can be used safely and comfortably by everyone. In this study, we focused on the profile slope and the International Roughness Index (IRI) as a physical property of the pavement surface and the muscle action potential, which is one of the indices to evaluate the impact of walking on the pavement surface. Therefore, we compared the impact of the pavement surface on the human body and the physical properties of the pavement surface, and conducted a rational evaluation of the walking surface from the human body's point of view. The results suggest that the amount of muscle activity of pedestrians is correlated with the International Roughness Index (IRI). It was also found that profile slopes of ±2% were unlikely to affect pedestrians. We also found the possibility of predicting the points where pedestrians feel likely to stumble.
